76ers star Maxey reportedly to miss rest of season

The final member of the Philadelphia 76ers' Big Three is done for the season.

Tyrese Maxey will not return in 2024-25 because of a finger tendon injury, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

Maxey has been side-lined since March 3, and Charania reported Thursday he will miss Philadelphia's final six games.

He is the latest star 76er to be ruled out for the remainder of the season, joining centre Joel Embiid and wing Paul George.

Maxey signed a five-year, $204million maximum contract extension with Philadelphia last summer after a break-out season in 2023-24, in which he was selected to his first All-Star team and named the league's Most Improved Player.

The fifth-year pro finishes this season with a career-high 26.3 scoring average to go with 6.1 assists per game and an average of 3.3 rebounds in 52 contests. Among those with a minimum of 50 games played, his average of 1.75 steals per game ranks fifth in the NBA.

Maxey, 24, had been wearing a splint while doing on-court work with the hope of returning, but with the Sixers playing out the string in this lost season, he will be shut down.

The 76ers entered this season with high expectations after going 47-35 in 2023-24, but injuries to their core players have completely derailed their pursuit of a title.

They entered play Thursday with a 23-53 record and will miss the play-offs for the first time since 2016-17 - Embiid's rookie year.

Embiid last played February 22 and was limited to just 19 games this season because of a troublesome left knee, while George has been out since March 4 to treat groin and knee injuries.

The trio of Embiid, Maxey and George appeared in just 15 games together.
