Van Nistelrooy admits Leicester's relegation is inevitable

Ruud van Nistelrooy admitted Leicester City's hopes of avoiding relegation are over after they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City on Wednesday.

After watching 17th-placed Wolves widen the gap to 12 points with a 1-0 victory over West Ham on Tuesday, 19th-placed Leicester fell to a meek defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Jack Grealish scored his first Premier League goal since December 2023 in just the second minute, then Omar Marmoush, playing as a striker with Erling Haaland injured, added a second for City.

Leicester only mustered two shots in the entire game as they suffered a 14th defeat in their last 15 Premier League matches and a seventh in succession, having failed to score a single goal in that latter run.

Only Crystal Palace, in September 2017, have ever lost eight straight Premier League games while failing to score on each occasion.

Van Nistelrooy admits the Foxes are now playing for pride, with just 24 points available to them.

He told BBC Sport: "We can be real about it, 12 points with eight games to play... It's a very big difference, too much.

"We have to focus game to game and on presenting ourselves in the best possible way. That is the main target now.

"Before the game, I mentioned that the gap was already big.

"I told the players that in the remaining moments we have at this level, we have to make the most of it, no matter the table or the score in the game."

Asked about Leicester's goalscoring issues, the Dutchman – who scored 95 Premier League goals for Manchester United during his playing career – said: "Ironic, isn't it?

"It's hard for all of us. We're working, we're trying things. We want to improve, the two goals we conceded were our own mistakes and you can't afford that, especially away at City. Scoring goals is a problem, the ball doesn't seem to go in.

"When you're not scoring, losing games... a bad start is extra hard to recover from. The gap is huge now, it's a challenge.

"Nevertheless, we have eight games to play and we have to represent ourselves in the best possible way and that's a challenge."

City boss Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, was pleased with his team's composure as they moved above Chelsea and into fourth place.

"We didn't concede anything except one chance at the end. It wasn't easy with 10 players behind the ball," he told BBC Sport.

"We missed the third goal to be more relaxed, so it was never over, but I'm pleased with a good performance.

"It was a performance where nothing wrong happened, everyone was focused. We missed a third goal, that's all."

On Grealish scoring his first Premier League goal since a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace 16 months ago, Guardiola added: "It's not easy when you don't play regularly.

"It was a good goal for him, playing in a more central position when he's more comfortable on the sides."
